Huawei to reportedly launch Android / Windows Phone dual-OS smartphone in Q2 2014
by Rakesh SoniLast month there were reports that Karbonn would launch dual-OS phones running both Android and Windows Phone by June. Huawei would also launch a similar dual-OS device, running both Android and Windows Phone, according to a recent report from TrustedReviews. This smartphone is expected to go on sale in the US in Q2, 2014, said Chief Marketing Officer Shao Yang, in an interview to the website.
Huawei announced the Ascend W1, the company’s first Windows Phone handset, back in January last year, after several delays. The successor, Ascend W2 was unveiled last November. Both these had mid-range specifications, and did not launch in India. A recent report said Microsoft plans to waive license fee for Windows Phone to Indian hardware partners, but Huawei still have to pay license fee.
Huawei introduced the Ascend G6, MediaPad X1 and MediaPad M1 at the MWC 2014 last month, but it did not unveil their third Windows Phone handset, Ascend W3.
Microsoft might be behind this, asking their partners to introduce dual-OS phones to improve the market share. Since the upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 OS would support new Snapdragon 200 and 400 chips and a range of features for making a low-cost smartphone, an affordable dual-OS smartphone might not be far away.
The company’s CMO also revealed that Android would definitely be their main focus, with Windows’ presence likely to play the supporting role. We still don’t have any specifications of the handset yet. Looks like we have to wait for few more months to hear more about Huawei’s dual-OS smartphone
