How To Root Nexus 9 & Install Twrp On Android 6.0 Marshmallow

CHECK PHONE MODEL
This guide is only for the Nexus 9 android smartphone. Don’t try this method on any of other Android devices, It may hard brick your device. So, first confirm your phone model number in your android phone settings. To do this Go the Settings page of your device and check out the “About Device” option.
PRE-REQUISITES AND REQUIREMENTS

1. BACKUP YOUR ANDROID DATA

2. INSTALL NEXUS 9 DRIVERS
First you need to Setup ADB and Fastboot Drivers on windows PC. This will help you to send basic linux commands, and a variety Android specific commands from PC to connected Android devices.
SETUP ADB & FASTBOOT DRIVERS ON PC
Now you need to install the USB drivers to connect your device with the computer to follow this guide. Without these USB drivers you can’t connect your device to the PC, first download and install these drivers on your system.
DOWNLOAD ANDROID USB DRIVERS
3. ENABLE USB DEBUGGING MODE
Now you need to enable USB debugging mode. Without enabling USB debugging mode on your device you can’t start the root, Custom ROM or Unlock process.
4. CHARGE YOUR ANDROID
If your device switched off during this process, it could damage or brick the device. Make sure that your Android battery is full charge or near about 50-70% battery level.
After following the above mention steps follow the below mention guide one by one to proceed with the tutorial. All the above mention steps are very important, so do follow all the steps and do exactly what is told.
ROOT NEXUS 9 ON ANDROID 6.0 MARSHMALLOW
Step 1. First you have to unlock the bootloader of your phone. If you already done this then go to the Step 2.
To unlock bootloader Install the ADB files on your PC here and this will create an ADB folder on your C:/ drive (C:/ADB).
Make sure you have backup your data as it will be erased. Then switch OFF your Nexus. Now enter into the Bootloader / Fastboot Mode on Nexus. To do this open the ADB folder from your PC C:/ Drive and then left-click on empty white space in the folder. Now, while holding the shift key, right click on empty white space to get a pop-up as shown below. Now choose Open command window here option from that.
Connect your device with the PC and Type in the following command and press Enter.
adb reboot bootloader
Now the phone will boot in bootloader mode. Test whether fastboot is working alright. In the command window by running the following command.
fastboot devices
Now you will see a serial no. with fastboot written after it. Type in the following command and press Enter to unlock bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
Now follow the on-screen instructions on your tablet to confirm the bootloader unlocking and erase all the data, then proceed. In the end, your Nexus will now reboot itself. Or you can always reboot your tablet with the following command if not rebooted automatically.
fastboot reboot
That’s it! Your Nexus bootloader is now unlocked!
Step 2. Now the bootloader is unlocked and now you have to install the TWRP recovery to get the root access on the phone. Download TWRP from below mention links and rename it to recovery.img

Step 3. Now move the recovery.img file to the ADB folder in C drive, that you created above at the time of ADB and fastboot installation.
Step 4. Download modified boot image file for Nexus 9 from the below mention links. And move it to the ADB folder where you saved the recovery.img file.

Step 5. Download SuperSU 2.50 zip file here and move the zip file on your phone internal memory.
Step 6. Now enter into the Bootloader / Fastboot Mode on Nexus. To do this open the ADB folder from your PC C:/ Drive and then left-click on empty white space in the folder. Now, while holding the shift key, right click on empty white space to get a pop-up as shown below. Now choose Open command window here option from that.
Connect your device with the PC and Type in the following command and press Enter.
adb reboot bootloader
Now the phone will boot in bootloader mode. Test whether fastboot is working alright. In the command window by running the following command.
fastboot devices
Step 7. Flash modified boot image now. Use the following command for that.
fastboot flash boot m-boot.img
Step 8. After this Flash the TWRP recovery on your phone.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Step 9. Once completed, boot your phone in recovery mode. To do this, disconnect the device. Now, use Volume up/down button to bring up RECOVERY menu, and then use Power button to select it. You will boot into recovery mode now, and will see TWRP recovery.
Step 10. Go to install and choose the SuperSU zip file that you saved on your Nexus in Step 5. Next, do the swipe action at the bottom of the screen to flash the SuperSU file.
Step 11. No go back to the main menu of recovery and select the Reboot system option to reboot your phone.
That’s it. Your Nexus device is rooted on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and TWRP recovery installed.
